- Adding cheese adds 80 to 90 calories, 4 to 5 g more protein, and 350 to 360 mg more sodium.
- Going double adds 210 to 220 calories and 17 to 18 g of protein.

How to read these numbers
The Whopper is not one fixed sandwich. Burger King lists eight versions built from three choices: one or two patties, cheese or no cheese, and mayo or no mayo. Each choice moves the numbers in a different direction, which is why a Whopper can range from 470 to 930 calories. The calculator above shows the exact listed values for the build you pick, and the small green and red labels show how far it is from a standard Whopper (630 calories, 38 g of fat, 810 mg of sodium and 26 g of protein).
Carbohydrates barely change between builds, staying between 49 and 50 g in every version. That is because the bun and vegetables stay the same. The differences come from the patties, cheese and sauce.
Why mayo makes the biggest difference
Mayo is the most calorie-dense part of a standard Whopper. Leaving it off lowers fat by 18 to 19 g and saturated fat by 3 g, while protein stays exactly the same. It also lowers sodium by 130 to 140 mg. If you like the sandwich but want a lighter meal, this one change has the largest effect for the smallest loss in what you get.
What cheese adds
A slice of cheese adds 80 to 90 calories, a few grams of protein and a large amount of sodium. On a single patty Whopper without mayo, cheese raises sodium from 670 mg to 1,030 mg. If you watch salt, cheese is the change to think about first. If you want extra protein and are not concerned about sodium, it is a reasonable add-on.
Single or double patty
The second patty adds about 210 to 220 calories and 17 to 18 g of protein. That is a good trade if protein is your goal, because the protein rises faster than the calories. The sodium change is small on plain builds, but the double with cheese reaches 1,230 mg, the highest of the eight builds here.
Which build fits which goal
- Lowest calories: Whopper (no mayo) at 470 calories, or the Whopper Jr. at 310 calories if you want a smaller sandwich.
- Best protein for the calories: Double Whopper (no mayo) gives 43 g of protein for 690 calories, about 6.2 g of protein per 100 calories. A standard Whopper gives about 4.1 g per 100 calories.
- Most protein overall: Double Whopper with Cheese at 48 g, with 930 calories.
- Lowest sodium: Whopper (no mayo) at 670 mg.
- Balanced middle option: Whopper with Cheese (no mayo) at 560 calories and 30 g of protein.
Whopper compared with other burgers
The Whopper family sits at the heavier end of the menu. For comparison, the Hamburger has 220 calories and 11 g of protein, the Cheeseburger has 270 calories and 13 g, the Double Cheeseburger has 350 calories and 20 g, and the Big King has 530 calories and 25 g. If your priority is protein per calorie, a Double Cheeseburger (about 5.7 g per 100 calories) is close to the double Whopper builds at a much lower total. The Whopper is the better fit when you want a larger sandwich with fresh toppings.
Whopper Jr. or regular Whopper?
The Whopper Jr. lists 310 calories, 20 g of fat, 390 mg of sodium and 13 g of protein. That is about half of a standard Whopper on every measure. It works well when you plan to add fries and a drink, because those extras can add as many calories as the sandwich itself.
What is not included
- Sides and drinks. Fries, onion rings, soda and shakes are not part of these numbers.
- Extra sauces and toppings. Added bacon, sauces or other extras will raise the totals.

Simple ways to order lighter

- Choose one patty when calories matter and two when protein matters.
- Skip the cheese if you are watching sodium.
- Pick water or an unsweetened drink so the calories go to the food.
